OxyContin was approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 1995. It was developed to treat chronic, moderate to severe pain. Designed as an oral medication, it was intended for absorption over a 12-hour time span.
The number of persons reporting use of OxyContin for non-medical purposes at least once in their lifetime increased from 221,000 in 1999 to 399,000 in 2000 to 957,000 in 2001.
OxyContin, introduced in December 1995, is a time-released form of the opium derivative oxycodone.

Identification of a 10mg OxyContin pill
- small white pill
- the number 10 is stamped on one side and OC is stamped on the other
Identification of a 20mg OxyContin pill
- small pink pill
- the number 20 is stamped on one side and OC is stamped on the other
